View from a hill top in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. December 2011. We were scouting locations for the Migrations film shoot. I had wanted to shoot on a hill, but between the coyotes and passing cars, decided on a spot farther down in the vast public park.

Photo taken in a small Greenwich Village garden last Tuesday by filmmaker/photo-journalist Kimberly Wang. Kimberly has a great eye. Plus her company’s name is Ear Dog, which is inspired by her sweet natured rescue dog.

Photo taken by the wonderful Gigi Stoll. Took nude pictures to see if I had the guts to do it. Found it an amazing experience. Very vulnerable and very liberating. I’d do it again.

With the talented and beautiful Shelia E after interviewing hre at B.B. King’s today. I interviewed her for the Finding the Funk documentary and afterwards she let us shoot her sound check and even let me count down the band, which was highly imitidating. Though people associate her with Prince her career before the Purple One and after is impressive.

Ran into writer/scholar/band leader Greg Tate at the Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn today. We go back the days when the Village Voice was actually a cultural force in New York and our reviews meant something. Love what he’s done with the wondrous Burnt Sugar Arkestra, which takes ideas he’s written about and manifested them in sound.

Had a very cool conversation with D’Angelo about black music past and present during a break on his current tour. D wouldn’t give up the name of his album but is hopeful it’ll be out by Thanksgiving, which would be as tasty as a well basted turkey to his many fans. His enthusiasm for music is boundless and it’ll be fun including his observations in Finding the Funk, which we hope to have ready by the spring.

D’Angelo does his first TV interview in a decade in a New Jersey hotel for the documentary Finding the Funk. Touring around the country on a bill with Mary J. Blige and finishing work on his first album in twelve years, D is making a welcome return to performing. He talked about funk’s history, how Prince turned him onto music, and how hip hop impacted his understanding of funk. D’s knowledge of black music history is as vast as his skills on keyboards, guitars and vocals are deep.

HIs mother Ebony wasn’t here but his two Aunts and grandmother were in full effect, so it was an eventful afternoon. Looking forward to many more brunches, lunches and stuff. He already has is own ideas about where to look.
