Detail of the legendary Roland TR-808 drum machine that was introduced in 1980, discontinued in 1984, and provided the rhythms for hundreds (perhaps thousands) of hits ever since. Most beat makers today employ digital files based on this device and have never actually seen the real deal. (Some may not even know it was a real machine and not just a name.) This original 808 os owned by LA composer Alan Elliott. From “Planet Rock” to the band 808 State to Kanye’s ‘808 and Heartbreak’ this is one of the most important instruments of the last thirty years.
